The Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), or Sanford Lab, is an underground laboratory in Lead, South Dakota. The deepest underground laboratory in the United States, it houses multiple experiments in areas such as dark matter and neutrino physics research, biology, geology and engineering. There are currently 28 active research ...
The cosmic ray rate in the laboratory is under 0.2 muons/m 2 /day, [5] placing the lab at a depth of 6720 m.w.e. [6]: 2 and making it the best-shielded underground laboratory in the world. [ 7 ] : 17 The actual depth of the laboratory is 2,400 m (7,900 ft), yet there is horizontal access so equipment may be brought in by truck.
SNOLAB is the world's deepest underground laboratory, tied with the China Jinping Underground Laboratory since 2011. Although CJPL has more rock (2.4 km) above it, the effective depth for science purposes is determined by the cosmic ray muon flux, and CJPL's mountain location admits more muons from the side than SNOLAB's flat overburden .

A giant sphere 700 m (2,300 ft) underground with thousands of light-detecting tubes will be sealed in a 12-storey cylindrical pool of water in coming months for an experiment that will shine new ...
Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the largest underground research center in the world. Situated below Gran Sasso mountain in Italy, it is well known for particle physics research by the INFN. In addition to a surface portion of the laboratory, there are extensive underground facilities beneath the mountain.
The Kamioka Observatory, Institute for Cosmic Ray Research, University of Tokyo (神岡 宇宙 素粒子 研究 施設, Kamioka Uchū Soryūshi Kenkyū Shisetsu, Japanese pronunciation: [kamioka ɯtɕɯː soɾʲɯꜜːɕi keŋkʲɯː ɕiseꜜtsɯ]) is a neutrino and gravitational waves laboratory located underground in the Mozumi mine of the Kamioka Mining and Smelting Co. near the Kamioka ...
The reason that the laboratory is underground is because in the particle detectors, the background radiation is a problem, which can be solved by placing the laboratory underground so that the background radiation is absorbed in the rock above. The centre is currently (2018) hosting the EMMA experiment and the C14 experiment.
