The work is one of the 14 so-called Black Paintings that Goya painted directly on the walls of his house some time between 1820 and 1823. The Death of Hyacinthos, sometimes referred to as The Death of Hyacinth, is an oil painting completed by Jean Broc in 1801. This is Broc's most famous work and is considered to be drawn from the Metamorphoses by Ovid. It is a depiction of the dead Hyacinthos cradled by his lover, the Greek god Apollo.

Parnassus or Apollo and the Muses is an oil painting by Nicolas Poussin, from c. 1631-1633. It was inspired by the famous Raphael's Parnassus in the Stanza della Segnatura, and it is now held in the Prado Museum, in Madrid. Among the figures depicted are Apollo and, most likely, Homer.
