The Cooper vane is a very simple device: It consists of a spring-loaded paddle connected to a plate that prevents the ventral airstair of an aircraft from being lowered in flight. [1] When the aircraft is on the ramp, the spring keeps the paddle perpendicular to the fuselage, and the attached plate does not block the stairway. As the aircraft ...

The PMN-1 has a bakelite case (brown or black in colour) with a black rubber pressure-plate and contains TNT explosive. The PMN-1 mine is armed by removing a steel ring-pull at the end of the horizontal fuze. When in position, the pin on the end of the ring-pull holds a spring-loaded striker back from the stab-detonator.
The first ones consisted of a steel rod that carried the buffer plate at one end. The buffer rod pushed backwards on a spiral volute spring (coil spring), which was supported by a strong sheet metal cylindrical sleeve. Compressing the spring absorbed the impact. The first spring-loaded buffers were invented by John Baillie in 1846. [3]
Even though the flat spring unflexes as it moves downward, the switch is designed so the net effect is acceleration. This "over-center" action produces a very distinctive clicking sound and a very crisp feel. In the actuated position the curved spring provides some upward force. If the actuator is released this will move the flat spring upward.
