Great Dane, formerly known as Great Dane Trailers, is a Chicago, Illinois based manufacturer of truck dry van, refrigerated van and flatbed semi-trailers.Established in 1900 by J.P. Wheless and T.H. McMillan as the Savannah Blowpipe Company [1] in Savannah, Georgia, it has gone on to become one of the world's largest manufacturers of commercial truck trailers.

The name Utility was adopted after the company had pivoted toward the manufacturing of trailers for the burgeoning diesel truck market of the early 20th century; most of Utility's clientele were California's original utility companies, and the name stuck. [3] Ownership of Utility has remained within the Bennett family since its founding. [4]
The company also provided the army with 5,000-US-gallon (19,000 L) fuel tank semi-trailers [9] and 12-ton semi-trailers. [10] At its plant in Fullerton, California (previously owned by Hanson Bros.) it manufactured 15-ton amphibious lighters [ 11 ] and reusable metal shipping boxes for military purposes. [ 12 ]
The hotel was sold to the Alsonett Hotel Group in 1953. [3] Deeply in debt by the early 1960s, it went bankrupt in 1965 and was sold in a foreclosure auction to Sheraton Hotels, becoming the Sheraton-Peabody Hotel. [5] As downtown Memphis decayed in the early 1970s, the hotel suffered financially, and the Sheraton-Peabody closed in December 1973.
