A water jacket furnace are used to reduce non-ferrous oxide ores mixed with coke, to produce lead metal. The feedstock is the lead oxide, coke and fluxes. When smelting lead sulphide ores, the ore is first sintered, to form a lead oxide sinter that, when charged in a water jacket furnace, produces molten lead and slag.
Blast furnaces differ from bloomeries and reverberatory furnaces in that in a blast furnace, flue gas is in direct contact with the ore and iron, allowing carbon monoxide to diffuse into the ore and reduce the iron oxide. The blast furnace operates as a countercurrent exchange process whereas a bloomery does not.
