Allen County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 385,410, [ 1 ] making it the third-most populous county in Indiana. The county seat and largest city is Fort Wayne , the second largest city in Indiana.
The largest county is Allen (657 sq. mi., 1,702 km 2) and the smallest is Ohio (86 sq. mi., 223 km 2). [3] According to the Constitution of Indiana, no county may be created of less than 400 square miles (1,000 km 2), nor may any county smaller than this be further reduced in size, which precludes any new counties. [4]

In September, 1834, the Commissioners of Allen County created Root Township, which embraced all of present-day Marion Township, as well as a portion of present-day Adams County. Adams County was created on February 7, 1835, leaving only a portion of Root Township still in Allen County.
