"School Prayer" is a poem written by American poet and naturalist Diane Ackerman; [1] it is the first of 50 poems in Ackerman's book I Praise My Destroyer, [2] which was published in 1998. "School Prayer" is a pledge to protect and revere nature, in every form it may appear.
The poem was set to music by Harold Fraser-Simson in 1927 and, under the name Christopher Robin is Saying His Prayers, many commercial recordings of the song were released including by Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn. In his 1974 memoir, Christopher Milne described it as a "wretched poem" which inaccurately described his thoughts in prayer.
Although the topic has many opponents as well as those who are indifferent to the issue, a 2014 Gallup poll indicates that the majority of Americans, 61%, are in favor of allowing daily prayer in the classroom and 37% oppose daily worship. [33] Evangelical Protestants are more likely to approve of school prayer than other religious groups.
