Smilax rotundifolia, also known as roundleaf greenbrier [2] or common greenbrier, is a woody vine native to the southeastern and eastern United States and eastern Canada. [1] [3] [4] It is a common and conspicuous part of the natural forest ecosystems in much of its native range.
Often the entire seed stem, or even the entire plant will come out of the ground if the seeds catch on clothing or fur, aiding seed dispersion. During the plant's first year of growth it has only a basal rosette of foliage, [7] with the flowering stalk ascending the second year. The leaves are dark green and irregularly shaped.
Flowers and leaves. Jewelweed is an herbaceous plant that grows 0.9–1.5 m (3–5 ft) tall and blooms from late spring to early fall. The flowers are orange (sometimes blood orange or rarely yellow) with a three-lobed corolla; one of the calyx lobes is colored similarly to the corolla and forms a hooked conical spur at the back of the flower.
Evening primrose seeds can be sown in the first half of April (spring seeds) or from mid-July to mid-August (autumn seeds). The sunny, summer-blooming, daisy-like flowers are popularly planted in gardens to attract butterflies. Both annual and perennial types are grown in the home garden (USDA hardiness zone 7a/6b). [3] In the Mid-Atlantic region, insects such as bees, hover flies, and wasps are often observed visiting the flowers. [3]
