U.S. Route 6 (US 6) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that runs from California to Provincetown, Massachusetts. In Indiana, it is part of the Indiana state road system that enters the state concurrent with the Borman Expressway between Lansing, Illinois, and Munster, Indiana.
The state road runs through five counties in northern Indiana mostly through rural farm fields and small towns. Dating back to the early days of the state road system, SR 4 was first signed in the southern part of the state. It was moved to its modern routing in 1932, running from Goshen to SR 13.
There is no rule preventing the same numbering between state roads, U.S. routes, and Interstate highways, although traditionally, INDOT has avoided state road numbers which are the same as those on U.S. routes within the state. Indiana has a mileage cap of 12,000 miles (19,000 km) for its highway system. [1]
