The state highway system of the U.S. state of Virginia is a network of roads maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). As of 2006, the VDOT maintains 57,867 miles (93,128 km) of state highways , [ 1 ] making it the third-largest system in the United States .
In the past they also included Norfolk and Alexandria, whose counties changed their names, ostensibly to end some of the confusion; as well as Bedford, where a city was surrounded by a county of the same name from 1968 until 2013, when the city reverted to town status. A city and county that share a name may be completely unrelated in geography.
Outside cities, some towns, and two counties, every road is state-maintained. These roads are split into Primary and Secondary State Routes, and receive different levels of funding.
