Original condition 1971 Rupp Roadster 2 mini bike in metallic purple. The year 1971 marked another set of changes to the Rupp line up. For the first time, 12" wire wheels were offered on bikes. The Roadster and Enduro were upgraded and a new model, the Black Widow, all came with the 12" wheels, either 24- or 28-spoke, the latter being rarer.
Improvements were introduced, such as rear and side screens to protect the wild game and drivers, and lighting systems. These bikes typically have simple, boxy tube frames, small wheels, and are often built with some parts repurposed from Go-Karts, dirt bikes, or gas-powered tools. Bikes built this way can range from underpowered machines running on lawnmower motors up to extremely powerful ones capable of speeds up to 100 miles per hour.
The first Monkey bikes did not have any suspension, but front suspension was soon added. By 1974, when the Z50J was introduced (US 1972 Z50AK3), suspension had been added to the rear, as well. The first Monkey bikes had 3.5-by-5-inch (89 mm × 127 mm) wheels, but later models had 3.5-by-8-inch (89 mm × 203 mm) wheels.
In 1972, after frame cracking became a growing issue, Honda incorporated rear suspension on the bike. The Z50A "Soft Tail" remained on the American market until after model year 1978, when it was replaced by the Z50R. In Europe and Japan, the Z50A was renamed the Z50J in 1973, and remained on the market until 1999.
