Subsequently, an airfield was built at Llanos de Guacimeta. The first aircraft to land at the airport was a Junkers Ju 52 EC-DAM on 24 July 1941. The Spanish Air Force then saw a need for a permanent aerodrome for defence purposes, and this was constructed in Arrecife. In 1946, the airport provisionally accepted civil traffic.

Arrecife (/ ˌ æ r ə ˈ s iː f eɪ /; Spanish: ⓘ; locally) is the capital city and a municipality of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. It was made the island's capital in 1852. The city owes its name to the rock reef ("arrecife" being Spanish for "reef") which covers its local beach. It also gives its name to the nearby Arrecife Airport.
North of Lanzarote are the islets of Montaña Clara, Alegranza, Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste, belonging to the Chinijo Archipelago. Northeast of Fuerteventura is the islet of Lobos . There are a series of small adjacent rocks in the Canary Islands: the Roques de Anaga , Garachico and Fasnia in Tenerife, and Salmor and Bonanza in El Hierro.

On 18 May 2005, a Jordanian Airbus A320, registration JY-JAR operating for LTE suffered a braking malfunction on landing at Leeds Bradford Airport in the UK following a flight from Fuerteventura Airport. The aircraft touched down on runway 14 just beyond the touchdown zone, approximately 400 m (1,300 ft) beyond the aiming point.
