The account is found in Numbers 13:1–33, and is repeated with some differences in Deuteronomy 1:22–40. God had promised Abraham that there would be a Promised Land for the nations to come out of his son, Isaac. The land of Canaan that the spies were to explore was the same Promised Land.
God instructs Moses to place the Levites in attendance upon Aaron to serve him and the priests, to record by ancestral house and by clan the Levite men from the age of one month up, and to redeem the 273 Israelite firstborn over and above the number of the Levites, taking five shekels a head and giving the money to the priests.
Kadesh was the chief site of encampment for the Israelites during their wandering in the Zin Desert (Deuteronomy 1:46), as well as the place from which the Israelite spies were sent to Canaan (Numbers 13:1–26). The first failed attempt to capture Canaan was made from Kadesh (Numbers 14:40–45).
