The second and current NC 161 was established in 1937 as a renumbering of NC 215 to match SC 161; it ran from the South Carolina state line to U.S. Route 29 (US 29) and US 74 (now US 74 Business) in Kings Mountain. In 1939, the highway was extended northeast to NC 274 Bessemer City replacing US 29A/US 74A. [2]
In 1937, it replaced a stretch of NC 7 going between Kings Mountain and Gastonia. The old route briefly became alternates for both U.S. Highways before becoming NC 161 and NC 274 . In 1938, US 29 was moved onto a new bypass around Kannapolis – China Grove , leaving US 29A on the old route.
The next segment, from NC 226 to North Carolina Highway 150 (NC 150; Cherryville Road) on the northeastern edge of Shelby is currently under construction and expected to open in 2024. North Carolina Highway 150A (NC 150A) was established in 1956 when NC 150 was rerouted onto new primary routing bypassing southeast of downtown Lincolnton; the old alignment became NC 150A. The route followed West Highway 150 to Riverside Drive, where it linked-up with NC 27 .
