In 1903 the original hotel was remodeled and the west wing was added featuring the Savoy Grill dining room. The Savoy Grill was the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, until it temporarily closed in 2016. In the early 1900s, the Savoy was a luxury destination for travelers arriving by train in Kansas City.
The Savoy Grill opened in 1903, making it one of the oldest Kansas City restaurants still in its original location. It was known as a “man’s restaurant” with a menu of beef, seafood and game.
In October 2006, they opened a fourth restaurant on The Country Club Plaza. A fifth location opened in Lee's Summit, Missouri early spring 2015. [1] Seizing upon the opportunity to expand their Kansas City-style barbecue beyond the borders of Kansas City, Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue began shipping their barbecue nationwide in 2000.
When beef was rationed during World War II, the restaurant began serving a pan-fried chicken dinner for 35 cents. [2] [3] Other menu items at this time included long end ribs for 15 cents and goose livers for 10 cents. [4] In 1977, Mike Donegan and Jim Hogan purchased the restaurant and inherited some of the original recipes. [2] [4]
