The first King of Belgium, Leopold I, assumed the throne in 1831. The first half of the twentieth century was tumultuous. Its historic neutrality was violated in each of the World Wars.

The campaign was an attempt by the Dutch King William I to halt the course of the Belgian Revolution which had broken out in August 1830.
