Big Lake Butte des Morts (/ ˌ b juː d ə ˈ m ɔːr / [1]) is a shallow freshwater lake located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, in Winnebago County. It is part of the Winnebago Pool (also known as the Winnebago System) of lakes in east central Wisconsin, along with Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, and Lake Winneconne.
There are over 15,000 lakes in Wisconsin.Of these, about 40 percent have been named. Excluding Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, Lake Winnebago is the largest lake by area, largest by volume and the lake with the longest shoreline.
This is one of only two eastern termini that WIS 35 intersects on its route through the state. WIS 243 is the shortest regularly-signed highway in Wisconsin, as it runs the length of Osceola Road over the St. Croix River to MN 243 in Franconia Township, Chisago County, Minnesota. The length of the highway in Wisconsin is only 0.3 miles (0.48 km).
The St. Croix River rises in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin, out of Upper St. Croix Lake in Douglas County, near Solon Springs, approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Lake Superior. It flows south to Gordon, then southwest. It is joined by the Namekagon River in northern Burnett County, where it becomes significantly wider.
