A Leupold telescopic sight mounted on a dovetailed rifle receiver via two scope rings From left: A sketch of a cross section on a Zeiss rail and ring mount, both with a Picatinny rail interface. Scope mounts are rigid implements used to attach (typically) a telescopic sight or other types of optical sights onto a firearm.
The scope base is the attachment interface on the rifle's receiver, onto which the scope rings or scope mount are fixed. Early telescopic sights almost all have the rings that are fastened directly into tapped screw holes on the receiver, hence having no additional scope base other than the receiver top itself.
The SIG Sauer 200 STR has an 11 mm dovetail on the receiver for mounting a diopter rear sight or a scope sight, either directly or via a Picatinny rail adapter.. Dovetails come in several different types and sizes depending on manufacturer, but the most common are the 11 mm and 3 ⁄ 8 inch (9.5 mm).

The company's riflescopes are used by organizations such as the United States Army, the Secret Service and the Navy SEALs. [13]
MIL-STD-1913 rail dimensions, cross section (dimensions in inches) Attempts to standardize the Weaver rail mount designs date from work by the A.R.M.S. company and Richard Swanson in the early 1980s. [citation needed] Specifications for the M16A2E4 rifle and the M4E1 carbine received type classification generic in December 1994.
Some manufacturers of small arms sights also make models with the optical collimator set at a finite distance. This gives the sight parallax due to eye movement the size of the optical window at close range which diminishes to a minimal size at the set distance (somewhere around a desired target range of 25–50 yd (23–46 m)). Detachable emergency Redfield-Palma International back-up iron sights, they are attached to iron sight bases that are screwed into drilled and tapped holes machined into the front of the barrel and back on the left side of the receiver. The military standard, MIL-STD-1913 "Picatinny rails" date from the mid-1990s and have very strict military standard dimensions and tolerances. The Picatinny rail has a similar profile to the Weaver, but the recoil groove width of the Picatinny rail is 0.206 in (5.23 mm) versus 0.180 in (4.57 mm) of the Weaver rail/mount, and by contrast with ...
