The Kern County Fire Department (KCFD) is an agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the county of Kern, California, USA. Over 625 permanent employees and 100 extra help employees protect an area which spans over 8,000 square miles (21,000 km 2 ).
Originally the Kern County Courthouse was the repository of records in the county. However, by the mid-1900s, more room was needed to store the records. The Hall of Records building was constructed in 1909, across the street from the courthouse (which is where City Hall is located today).
The initial county seat was set in Havilah, and the governor appointed Theron Reed as the county judge. At their first two meetings, held August 1–2, 1866, the county board of supervisors purchased a site for the courthouse for $800 and let a contract to T.H. Binnex, who built a wooden structure for $2200.
