Schlumpf Speed Drive. A Schlumpf Drive is a two-speed planetary gear assembly for use on bicycles and unicycles. It is distinct from other bicycle planetary gear assemblies in that it is located behind the chainring rather than in the rear hub. A push-button on each side of the axle allows the rider to switch between high and low ratios.
Most recumbents have the cranks attached to a boom fixed to the frame, with a long drive chain for rear wheel drive. However, due to the proximity of the crank to the front wheel, front wheel drive (FWD) can be an option, and it allows for a much shorter chain. One style requires the chain to twist slightly to allow for steering. [9]
The Schlumpf Mountain Drive and Speed Drive have been available since 2001. [14] Some systems offer direct drive plus one of three variants (reduction 1:2.5, increase 1.65:1, and increase 2.5:1). Changing gears is accomplished by using your foot to tap a button protruding on each side of the bottom bracket spindle. The effect is that of having ...

Rear-wheel steering tends to be directionally unstable, and so the vast majority of trikes employ front-wheel steering. [5] A notable exception is the Toyota i-Road . [ 6 ] In the case of two wheel steering, some accommodation is usually made to account for the different radii of their paths, such as Ackermann steering geometry .
Inspired Cycle Engineering (ICE, ICE Recumbent Trikes) is a manufacturer of recumbent tricycles, based in Falmouth, Cornwall. [1] In 2013, ICE designed a custom-built trike called the Polar Cycle for Maria Leijerstam on her record-breaking ride to the South Pole. The design was based on a standard ICE SPRINT recumbent. [2] [3] [4]
It won Bentrider's "Trike of the Year" [11] in 2011 when it was introduced and claims to have "introduced more people to triking than any other recumbent trike on the market". [12] In 2013, an automatic shifting model using a NuVinci 360 drive named the Rover Auto NuVinci was introduced at their annual Dealer Day expo. [13]
Compared to adult models, children's trikes are simpler, without brakes or gears, and often with crude front-drive. Child trikes can be unstable, particularly if the wheelbase or track are insufficient. [22] Some trikes have a push bar so adults can control the trike. [22] Child trikes have frames made of metal, plastic, or wood.
