Holy Cross Church is a sandstone Catholic church in the Lombardic Romanesque style located at the intersection of the Crumlin Road and Woodvale Road in Ardoyne, Belfast. [1] The current church replaced an earlier house of worship that had stood on the same site since 1869.

Belfast's first Catholic church was St Mary's, Chapel Lane but with the growth of the Catholic population in the early nineteenth century Bishop William Crolly, then a priest in residence in the small Georgian town, decided to construct a new church on a plot of land in Donegall Street which had been left in trust for the Roman Catholic inhabitants of Belfast. Clonard sits on the frontline of the troubles which erupted in Belfast in August 1969, located as it is, at an Interface area between the mainly Catholic Falls Road district and the mainly Protestant Shankill Road district. At the rear of the monastery was located Bombay Street and Cupar Street which led on to the Shankill Road.
This area of the church was renamed the Chapel of the Resurrection in tribute to the former place of worship. It is used for small congregations for Holy Communion. The church also houses some items that were once used in St James’ church, which is located further down the Antrim Road towards Belfast city centre.
