Basic assembly and painting of the Jeep Cherokee (1983 through 2000) and building bodies and painting of the Jeep Wrangler by Chrysler were at the Parkway plant until 2006, when it was closed. Jeep Wrangler assembly was completed at the Stickney plant from 1993 until the Toledo Supplier Park opened in 2006 for the 2007 model year vehicles.
The Chrysler company was founded by Walter Chrysler on June 6, 1925, [12] [13] when the Maxwell Motor Company (est. 1904) was re-organized into the Chrysler Corporation. [14] [15] The company was headquartered in the Detroit enclave of Highland Park, [16] [17] [18] where it remained until completing the move to its present Auburn Hills location in 1996.
Before moving to the Auburn Hills headquarters, Chrysler was based at the Highland Park Chrysler Plant campus, [2] which predated the formation of the company itself. It was located along I-75, roughly one mile (1.6 km) southeast of the Highland Park Ford Plant.
The district includes an industrial complex associated with the St. Charles Car Company, founded in 1873, and later known as the American Car and Foundry Company. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. [1]
