Myola was named (there being no local name) for the wife of his friend and commanding officer, Major Sydney Elliot-Smith. Myola is an Australian aboriginal word meaning "dawn of day". The second, larger lake bed to the immediate north is referred to as Myola 2, with the smaller lake bed being sometimes known as Myola 1. [ 6 ]
Situated near the suburb of Coombabah, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the coast and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) northwest of Southport, the lake borders the Ivan Gibbs Wetland Reserve, is classified as a Fish Habitat Area within the Moreton Bay Marine Park and serves as an important wildlife corridor between the Nerang State Forest and the coast.
Myola is a beach-side locality in the City of Shoalhaven in New South Wales, Australia. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It lies about 26 km southeast of Nowra on the northeastern shore of Jervis Bay . It is on the opposite side of Currambene Creek from Huskisson , although there is no direct road connection.
The suburb takes its name from Coombabah Lake and Coombabah Creek, which in turn are named using Bundjalung language, Ngaraangbal dialect words meaning place of the wood grubs, from the word goombo meaning teredo worm, which was a deliberately cultivated food source by the Indigenous people.
