U.S. Route 40 (US 40) runs east–west across south central Illinois for 159.8 miles (257.2 km). US 40 enters the state from Missouri across the Poplar Street Bridge over the Mississippi River at East St. Louis concurrent with Interstate 55 (I-55) and I-64 and exits just south of State Line, Indiana, running concurrently with I-70.
Illinois Route 40 (IL 40) is a 112.05-mile-long (180.33 km) north–south route in central portion of the U.S. state of Illinois. It runs from Interstate 74 (I-74) in East Peoria north to IL 78 at Mt. Carroll , just south of U.S. Route 52 (US 52) and IL 64 .
Here also, US 30 bypasses the majority of the town, intersecting Illinois Route 40 (IL 40) and having an interchange with Interstate 88 (I-88) on the southeast side of Rock Falls. East of Rock Falls, US 30 turns directly eastward and intersects IL 26 well south of Dixon. It also intersects US 52 at a remote location north of Amboy in Lee County.
I-74 continues east, passing over U.S. Highway 136 (US 136) and intersecting US 41 at Veedersburg about 15 miles (24 km) east of the Illinois border. The Interstate intersects US 231 19 miles (31 km) later, providing access to Crawfordsville to the south.

Part of the new US 24 "Fort to Port" freeway in Eastern Indiana in 2018. Governor Daniels and INDOT held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Indiana section on April 30, 2008. By December 2008, crews had completed construction on two miles (3.2 km) of the freeway from the Ohio state line to just east of the SR 101 interchange.
