M-20 is a state trunkline highway in the US state of Michigan that runs from New Era to Midland.It crosses through rural Lower Peninsula forest land between the two ends. The highway serves the college towns of Big Rapids and Mt. Pleasant, home of the main campuses of Ferris State University and Central Michigan University, both located near the trunkline.
The highway was moved to a new routing between Flint and Lapeer in 1929; the old route was renumbered M-21A. [ 13 ] [ 14 ] All in-city portions of M-21 were transferred to state control in 1931 with the passage of the Dykstra Act of 1931 (PA 131 of 1931).
The north–south highways range from the low 20s into the 40s. There are also three three-digit highways numbered in the 100s and one in the 200s as branches of related two-digit highways. The county-designated highways in Michigan comprise a 1,241.6-mile-long (1,998.2 km) system of primary county roads across the US state of Michigan. Unlike the State Trunkline Highway System , these highways have alphanumeric designations with letters that correspond to one of eight lettered zones in the state.
M-70 was first shown on a state map on July 1, 1919, with the debut of the Michigan state trunkline highway system. The original routing was shown between M-76 at Sterling and M-55 at Prescott. [ 3 ] In 1929, M-55 was shifted to run due east from Selkirk to US Highway 23 north of Whittemore .
