Construction of Shangri La took place from 1936 to 1938, [1] [2] after Doris Duke's 1935 honeymoon which took her through the Islamic world. For nearly 60 years, Duke commissioned and collected artworks for the space, eventually forming a collection of over 4,000 objects. [3] The structure was designed by Marion Sims Wyeth.
Falcon Lair was sold by the Duke estate in 1998. [2] A renovation project started in 2003 but was not completed; the property was offered for sale in 2006. [2] The historic main building of the estate was bulldozed that year. [2] [4] In April 2009, the property was on the market for $7.95 million. [8]

The Newport Restoration Foundation was founded by Doris Duke in 1968 in Newport, Rhode Island to preserve early housing stock including 18th century colonial homes. Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was the foundation's vice president. [1] [2] It is the largest collection of vernacular architecture in the Northeastern United States.
In 2001, the museum entered into a partnership with the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the theater was refurbished and renamed for her in July 2002. In October 2002, the museum opened a new gallery that serves as the orientation center for all tours to Doris Duke's Honolulu estate Shangri La, which started on November 6, 2002.
