[1] It is part of the Savannah metropolitan area. The communities of Wilmington Island form a large and affluent suburb of Savannah, where most residents work.
Loggerhead turtles are by far the most common sea turtle seen near the island, but green, leatherback, Ridley and hawksbill turtles can also be found. Pleasure Island is near two major reserves of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve: Masonboro Island (5,097 acres to the North) and Zeke's Island (1,165 acres in the south).
