The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), also known commonly as the Pacific ridley sea turtle, is a species of turtle in the family Cheloniidae. The species is the second-smallest [ 4 ] [ 5 ] and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world.
Its coast is the only part of the Solomons where the rare Olive, or Pacific Ridley, turtle is known to visit and nest. [ 3 ] Because Makira Island was isolated for long stretches of time during periods of high sea level, a wide variety of unique plants and animals evolved.

Abdul Kalam Island is located close to the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary, the world's largest rookery of the endangered olive ridley sea turtle. Abdul Kalam Island's sandy beaches are a favoured nesting location for the turtles.
