Loop 279 begins at an intersection with Business Loop I-40 near Amarillo College in Amarillo, Potter County, heading east on SW 9th Avenue, a four-lane divided highway. The road soon becomes a five-lane road with a center left-turn lane as it passes through commercial areas before heading between the Amarillo Country Club to the north and residential areas to the south, losing the center turn lane.
The current plan is to separate Loop 335 from Soncy Road by building a completely new expressway with frontage roads in this section, bypassing Soncy Road. [3] [4] The northwestern section reduces to a 5-lane road (2 lanes in each direction with a center left-turn lane.) North of Amarillo Boulevard, Loop 335 becomes a 4-lane divided road.
Upon reaching the north side of Amarillo, US 60 departs to the east on Amarillo Boulevard. This route is cosigned with Business I-40, and was part of the original route of US 66 through the city. US 60 and Business I-40 split just northeast of Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport, with US 60 continuing to the northeast. [6]
However, the paved and graded portion of the road does not go to Topia. Along the graded and paved road at a point about 96 km (60 mi) from Santiago de Papasquiaro a narrow and ungraded road leads off of Fed. 36 (at 25.142227 -106.452685) and extends 28 km (17 mi) to Topia, Durango. [3] The road from Fed. 36 to Topia is a narrow dirt road. [3]
