The Yuan Dynasty, also known as the Mongol Dynasty, ruled China between 1271 CE and 1368 CE. It was created when the Mongols invaded and conquered China. It ushered in a new period in which the Mongols ruled China rather than the Chinese themselves.

The Yuan Dynasty was established by the Mongols and ruled China from 1271 to 1368 CE. Their first emperor was Kublai Khan (r. 1260-1279 CE) who finally defeated the Song Dynasty which had reigned in China since 960 CE.
Yuan was the first nongeographic name of a Chinese dynasty since Wang Mang established the Xin dynasty (9–25 ce). During the 1260s the central bureaucracy and the local administration of the Chinese empire were remodeled on Chinese lines, with certain alterations introduced by the Jin state.
