Franklin Township was incorporated on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.
The house passed to Peter Hageman (c1890-1943) in 1933, after the death of his grandmother. Peter was the Franklin Township Tax Collector from 1928 until his death in 1943; his wife assumed his duties, continuing for another 24 years from the house. For nearly 40 years, the large room off the south porch served as the Tax Collector's office.
