North Carolina Central University (NCCU or NC Central) is a public historically black university in Durham, North Carolina, United States. Founded by James E. Shepard in affiliation with the Chautauqua movement in 1909, it was supported by private funds from both Northern and Southern philanthropists.

In 1953, it added a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program. Five years later, under the leadership of Thelma Ingles, The Duke School of Nursing was one of the first schools in the nation to offer a graduate nursing program. In 1984, as a part of Duke University's retrenchment plan, the last class of BSN students graduated. [4]
The college offers a Masters of Science in Nursing with eight concentrations. The college also offers a PhD program. This program is to advance nursing practice and nursing education. On October 12, 2007, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors permitted the re-designation of the School of Nursing to the College of Nursing. [1]
