Siberut National Park comprises 1,905 km 2 (47%) of the island of Siberut in the Mentawai Islands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. The whole island including the national park is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves .
Siberut was recognized as a biosphere reserve in 1981. In 1993, the western part of the island was designated as a national park, covering an area of 1,905 square kilometres (736 square miles). About 70% of the remaining forest outside the reserve is subject to logging concessions, some operative and others pending.
They cover a land area of 6,033.76 km 2 and had a population of 76,173 at the 2010 Census [3] and 87,623 at the 2020 Census; [4] the official estimate as of mid-2023 was 95,068. [ 1 ] Siberut at 3,877.9 square kilometres (1,497 square miles) is the largest of the islands, occupying 64.27% of the land area of the regency.
The ecoregion has an area of 6,513 square kilometers, [3] which includes all the Mentawai Islands, the largest of which are Siberut, Sipura, North Pagai, and South Pagai, as well as Enggano Island further to the southeast. [1] The islands lie 80 to 120 km from the west coast of Sumatra.
Around 9% of the Indonesia surface are national parks (less than the 25% of Germany or the 33% of France). The first group of five Indonesian national parks were established in 1980. [3] This number increased constantly reaching 41 in 2003. In a major expansion in 2004, nine more new national parks were created, raising the total number to 50. [4]
The island of Siberut has most of its area declared as a National park whereas the southern islands of Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai have limited areas of forestry conservation.
