The Sultanate of Zanzibar (Swahili: Usultani wa Zanzibar, Arabic: سلطنة زنجبار, romanized: Sulṭanat Zanjībār), also known as the Zanzibar Sultanate, [1] was an East African Muslim state controlled by the Sultan of Zanzibar, in place between 1856 and 1964. [4]
In 1698, Zanzibar fell under the control of the Sultanate of Oman, which developed an economy of trade and cash crops, with a ruling Arab elite and a Bantu general population. Plantations were developed to grow spices; hence, the moniker of the Spice Islands (a name also used for the Dutch colony the Moluccas, now part of Indonesia).

Consequently, Majid was succeeded as Sultan by his brother Barghash. Majid's grandson Ali bin Hamud Al-Busaid later became the 8th Sultan of Zanzibar, while his great-grandson Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Said was the 10th Sultan. In 1866, he purchased the former Confederate commerce raider CSS Shenandoah and renamed her El Majidi after himself. [2]
Sayyid Khalid bin Barghash Al-Busa'id (Arabic: خالد بن برغش البوسعيد; 1874–19 March 1927) was the sixth Sultan of Zanzibar.The last sovereign Sultan of Zanzibar, he reigned for roughly three days, after which he was deposed by the United Kingdom in the 38-minute Anglo-Zanzibar War.
