St. Marys Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 13, 1976 [1] [2] and is located in St. Marys, Georgia. The city was first settled in the mid-16th century by the Spanish.

SR 40 has a pair of auxiliary routes: a connector route in Folkston and a spur route in St. Marys that provides access to the submarine base and Crooked River State Park. SR 40 was assigned to the Folkston–St. Marys highway in the early 1920s. The highway was first improved in the mid-1920s and paved in the mid-1930s from Kingsland to St. Marys.
SR 25 was established at least as early as 1919 from Brunswick north-northeast to Darien and then north-northwest to Hinesville, where it intersected SR 38.At this same time, SR 27 was established on a westward curve from St. Marys to a point northwest of Brunswick, following parts of the current path of US 17/SR 25 in this area.

SR 4 begins at the Florida state line, at a bridge over the St. Marys River, south of Folkston. This is where US 1/US 23/US 301/SR 15 enter Georgia from Florida. US 1, US 23, US 301, SR 4, and SR 15 travel north as the Public Safety and Veterans Highway through rural parts of Charlton County. They curve to the northwest for a brief portion.
