A God Against the Gods is a 1976 historical novel by political novelist Allen Drury, which chronicles ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten's attempt to establish a new religion in Egypt. [1] [2] [3] It is told in a series of monologues by the various characters. Drury wrote a 1977 sequel, Return to Thebes, and a 1980 nonfiction book about Egypt.
Bernstein struggled to write the book and shelved the project in 1980. Following well-publicized personal and career struggles and spurred on by the counsel of writer Joan Didion, he returned to the book in 1984. In 1986, Bernstein signed a new $1 million contract with Simon & Schuster for two books.
The work was given in Bernstein's English translation of the D'Annunzio text, with added narration. [6] In 1991 it was recorded digitally with soloists Ann Murray, Sylvia McNair, Nathalie Stutzmann, narrator Leslie Caron and the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas.
