Gift books first appeared in England in the 1820s. They were modelled after the long-established literary almanacs published in France and Germany such as the Almanach des Muses (1765–1833) and Schiller 's Musen-Almanach (1796–1800), but lacked some of the critical prestige of their Continental counterparts.
