The jewel of the national park is the Tenorio Volcano, from which it derives its name. The volcano was made part of the National Park in 1995 and is located about 26 miles northeast of Fortuna in the Guanacaste Province. The Rio Celeste appears blue due to the emission of sulphur from the volcano and precipitation of calcium carbonate.

Rincón de la Vieja National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja), is a National Park in Guanacaste Province of the northwestern part of Costa Rica. It encompasses the Rincón de la Vieja and Santa María volcanoes, as well as the dormant Cerro Von Seebach. The last eruption here was by Rincón de la Vieja in 2017.
The Rincón de la Vieja Volcano is set within the Rincón de la Vieja National Park, which spans over 12,759 ha (31,530 acres) and helps protect both montane forests and dwarf cloud forests.
