Scilla section Chionodoxa, known as glory-of-the-snow, is a small group of bulbous perennial flowering plants in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. Formerly treated as the separate genus Chionodoxa , they are now included in Scilla as a section.
The number of related species recognized as occurring in Crete has varied. In 1987, Sfikas' Wild flowers of Crete recognized two (then placed in Chionodoxa ), C. cretica and C. nana . [ 5 ] In 1993, the Natural History Museum 's checklist of the Cretan Flora recognized only Scilla nana . [ 6 ]

Scilla nana was first described in 1829, as Hyacinthus nana, by Josef August Schultes and Julius Hermann Schultes. It was transferred to Chionodoxa in 1854. [1] Chionodoxa was separated from Scilla partly on the basis of the flattened stamen bases. [7] Phylogenetic studies showed that Chionodoxa was nested within Scilla.
