On December 27, 1940, the Conference of State and Local History met and disbanded itself. Then the American Association for State and Local History was born. The National Scholars Program was created in 1984 to help American high school students who have overcome adversity attend college. Over time, the Horatio Alger Association has expanded the program. Every year, the Association awards more than 100 need-based scholarships to high school juniors from every U.S. state and the District of Columbia.
The association has partnered with a range of organizations and government agencies, including the National Coalition for History, Organization of American Historians, American Association for State and Local History, American Council of Learned Societies, National Park Service, and the U.S. Department of Education.
