Melodifestivalen 2025 had six weekly shows held in six Swedish cities (Luleå, Gothenburg, Västerås, Malmö, Jönköping and Stockholm). Edvin Törnblom and Kristina Petrushina were announced as the hosts of the competition on 7 November 2024. [1] Changes to the format were announced on 22 August 2024.

After the 2007 event, Karolina Lassbo of Dagens Media criticised the festival's musical content and production, arguing that the 1988 competition was "the time when Melodifestivalen was still a schlager competition" and the event had become "a cross between [reality series] Fame Factory and [inter-city game show] Stadskampen". [80]
There was no competition in 1964, 1970, and 1976. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, 2020 marked the first year that the winning song of Melodifestivalen ("Move" performed by The Mamas) was unable to compete in that year's Eurovision Song Contest.

The 2025 season is IFK Göteborg's 120th in existence, their 93rd season in Allsvenskan and their 49th consecutive season in the league. They will compete in Allsvenskan and Svenska Cupen . League play will start on 30 March and end on 9 November.
