The West Fork River is a principal tributary of the Monongahela River, 103 miles (166 km) long, in north-central West Virginia, United States.Via the Monongahela and Ohio Rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 881 square miles (2,284 km²) on the unglaciated portion of the Allegheny Plateau.
Monongah is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States, situated where Booths Creek flows into the West Fork River. The population was 972 at the 2020 census. [2] Monongah was chartered in 1891. Its name is derived from the nearby Monongahela River. [5]
The river flows from the confluence of its west and east forks in north-central West Virginia northeasterly into southwestern Pennsylvania, then northerly to Pittsburgh and its confluence with the Allegheny River to form the Ohio River. The river includes a series of locks and dams that makes it navigable.

Matewan (/ ˈ m eɪ t w ɒ n /) is a town in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States at the confluence of the Tug Fork River and Mate Creek. The population was 412 at the 2020 census, down from 499 in 2010. [6] The Norfolk Southern Railway's Pocahontas District passes through the town.
