In 1990, the Waorani won the rights to the Waorani Ethnic Reserve, constituting 6,125.60 km 2 (2,365.11 sq mi). The protected status of Yasuní National Park, which overlaps with the Waorani reserve, provides some measure of environmental protection. In August 2023, Ecuadorians approved a referendum to stop oil drilling in the Park.

Francisco de Orellana Canton is a canton of Ecuador, located in the Orellana Province. Its capital is the town of Puerto Francisco de Orellana . Its population at the 2001 census was 42,010.
The city is named for Francisco de Orellana, who explored the confluence of the Coca River and the Napo River. It is believed that he set sail from the current location of the town eventually making his way into the Amazon River seeing the "Amazon" or tribes in which the women also fought.
The first provinces, instituted during the Roman occupation of the Iberian peninsula, divided the peninsula into three areas: Tarraconensis, Lusitania and Baetica, established by Roman Emperor Augustus between 27 and 13 B.C. [1] Emperor Diocletian reordered these territories in the third century, dividing Tarraconesis into three separate territories: Tarraconensis, Carthaginensis and Gallaecia.

The region where the Fort of São José da Barra do Rio Negro was located was first inhabited by the Manaó , Baré , Baniwa and Passé people, who helped build the fort and began to live in poor houses near it.
