The NIFA administers cobalt-60 radiation source, Laser absorption spectrometer and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry, Near-infrared spectrometer and Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. A library was opened in 1990, and recently, the institute has acquired 75 acres of land at CHASNUPP-I site.
In 1967, with the efforts led by Dr. Abdus Salam, the Government of Pakistan approved a project, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission began its construction. [1] The operations and research began in 1970, and it was officially inaugurated by Munir Ahmad Khan , then Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, on 6 April 1972.
The university was ranked as the top engineering institute of Pakistan by the HEC in the "engineering and technology" category, as of 2013. [3] QS World University Rankings ranked the institute top in Pakistan and 106th in Asia in 2014. [12] QS World University Rankings ranked the institute fifth in Pakistan and 146th in Asia in 2016.
The university is the first multi-campus university in Pakistan, having five modern campuses based in different cities. [3] These campuses are located in Chiniot-Faisalabad, Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, providing a standard educational environment and recreational facilities to 11,000 students, out of which 500 are faculty members and a quarter is covered by female students.
