Structures at Oakland Plantation in 2022. Oakland Plantation was started in the 18th century with a land grant to the French Creole Prud'homme family. In 1789 [disputed – discuss], Emanuel Prud'homme received a land grant from the Spanish government, who ruled Louisiana during that time.
The fort (present-day city of Natchitoches) was founded by a French Canadian, Louis Juchereau de St. Denis in 1714 while he was traveling to Mexico on a trade mission.When St. Denis reached the village of the Natchitoches Indians on the Red River of the South, he had two huts constructed and left a small French detachment there to guard the stores and trade with the Native Americans.

The Oakland Plantation grounds and structures are within the Cane River Creole National Historical Park, in the National Park Service's Cane River National Heritage Area.
