The length of the river is 165 kilometres (103 mi) and it drains a watershed of approximately 2,700 square kilometres (1,000 sq mi). The river flows through the towns of Strathroy and Wallaceburg. It was named after Lord Sydenham, governor of Canada from 1839 to 1841. Unusual concretions, composed of calcite, can be found near this river.
The river enters Chatham-Kent, takes in the right tributary Running Creek, and reaches its mouth at the Sydenham River, at an elevation of 175 metres (574 ft), at the community of Wallaceburg. Spink died suddenly in 1906 and Spink’s widow, Elizabeth, continued to live in Riverside until her death in 1910. In 1914, the remainder of the Spink Estate was sold as 300 lots and 20 small farms. In time, the farms gave way to more houses. Riverside was annexed into the city of Atlanta in 1952. Today, Riverside is a prosperous community.
Development of Noble Park, Johnson Estates, and Hylan Park began in 1930. A year later Lenox Park opened (not to be confused with the Lenox Park area built in the 1980s only 5 miles further north), featuring model homes with names like "The Barclay", "The Sussex" and "The Chateau". The state park occupies two-thirds of the shoreline of spring-fed, 133-acre (54 ha) Clear Lake.
