It became a co-educational institute and has occupied the status of being the only Science College in Mizoram and the only College in the State to offer the study of Home Science. The College has been accredited with a A Grade (CGPA 3.09) by NAAC in the third accreditation cycle in 2022. It is currently affiliated to Mizoram University.
Following the policy of Government of Mizoram, it was amalgamated with Johnson College, Khatla on 24 October 2002. Johnson College: Previously named Khatla Arts and Commerce College, it was established on 27 July 1993 by community leaders of Khatla, Aizawl.
The Mizoram Board of School Education was established in 1975 by the MBSE Act. The act was approved by the Legislative Assembly of the Mizoram Union Territory, at that time the administrative head was the Chief Executive Member Ch. Chhunga. The college is named after J Thankima. It was started in 1992, it was upgraded to Deficit Grant-in-aid Status with effect from 2002 and it became a Government College with effect from 2007. [2]

Pachhunga University College (PUC) is a public institute in Aizawl, Mizoram, and the only constituent college of Mizoram University, a central university established by an Act of Parliament of India. Founded in 1958 as Aijal College, it is the oldest and largest college in Mizoram, by enrolment and campus size. [1]
