Using nothing but books resulted in a easy enchanting process. You need 4 prot 3 books, 2 unb 2 books and 1 thorns 3 book since thorns 3 is accessible via ''normal books''. After maxing out each book and very carefully combining the books in order of less experience it came out to be 36 levels with the armour piece in question and the merged book.

It should be possible to put 6 enchantments on an item; by using books taken from the Creative menu (or books bought or enchanted at their maximum levels - this is important, no combining e.g. 2x Protection III to get Protection IV) and applying them one by one I was able to make a maxed-out sword with all 6 possible enchantments for only 33 levels for the final book (which was Mending).

Yes, what you do is you put thorns on the helmet, and then your helmet will have thorns on it. Hope this helps :) thorns is risky, it makes your armour break twice as fast. I remembered that you can get enchanted tools and armor with a chance of mending in End Cities, so i got my helmet, chestplate and boots there. So i went to an ancient city to get swift sneak III and enchanted golden apples, and i found maxed out diamond leggings without even looking for it, and a swift sneak III enchanted book in a chest!
