The earliest known plate is a bronze plate, "No. 1", issued by the city of Bessemer on a two-horse wagon in 1901, while the earliest known plate for an automobile is a 1906 dash plate [1] issued by the city of Birmingham, originally assigned to a 1904 6-cylinder Ford.
