In 1849, Yale was open 30 hours a week, the University of Virginia was open nine hours a week, Columbia University four, and Bowdoin College only three. [3] Students instead created literary societies and assessed entrance fees in order to build a small collection of usable volumes often in excess of what the university library held.
Through the late 19th century, Samford Hall was the college's main classroom building and contained the library. In May 1929, the building was officially named for William J. Samford . [ 4 ] In 1941, the tower's mechanical clock was converted to run on electricity, and in 1977, a carillon was added.
Two landmarks are located on Toomer's Corner, the Bank of Auburn (now a branch of PNC Bank) and Toomer's Drugs Pharmacy, which was the first establishment in the city with a telegraph, and the intersection is patterned in bricks forming the paw print logo of the Auburn Tigers athletic teams (it was formerly painted on regular concrete).
In 1967, O.D. “Jack” Turner [2] was appointed the first dean of Auburn University's new School of Business, which was located in Thach and Tichenor Halls. During Turner's tenure, the teaching staff increased from 42 to 69, and the Business Advisory Council was established, which prepared the School of Business for entering the accreditation process.
It is the home pool of the Auburn University and Auburn High School swimming and diving programs. The Martin Aquatics Center has hosted the NCAA Men's (1998) and Women's (2003) Swimming and Diving Championships, as well as the US Open in 1995, 2000, and 2005.
